TORONTO, Ont. (11/12/16) - Konstantine Tsafatinos, 28, waits with his father Dimitrios, 62, for a new anti-anxiety presciption at a pharmacy in Toronto, Ont. on December 11, 2016. Dimitrios was diagnosed with prostate cancer only a few weeks after the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health diagnosed him as having bipolar disorder. His wife immediately hired lawyers for a divorce. Seeing the state of their father's instability, Konstantine and his younger brother Jacob have moved back into the family home to care for him. "I suffer. I'm in pain. I can't relax. Please, I can't take it no more," Dimitrios says. His sons discovered that Dimitrios has been addicted to Percocets for approximately 10 years. Before they can decipher the right combination of medications for their father's illnesses, they must wean him off of the drugs that he has been abusing. Blind to his addiction, doctors continue to prescribe pills to take away the pain he complains about incessantly. For now, the yelling only stops once he is handed a painkiller.  Photo by Vanessa Tignanelli

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Laura Ryan has been waiting for her Canadian work permit to be processed for over seven months, stopping her from working and restricting her feeling of independence. She describes her state of limbo as "mind numbing". The shower, she says, is "the most relaxed and calm moments of my day". Photo by Andrew Ryan

(12/8/2016) BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Amanda Barnes, 17, has been in the foster care system since she was three years old. Hastings Children’s Aid took her from her biological parents after all of her baby teeth rotted out due to malnutrition. “I like to come down to the river to relax,” she said. “When I come down here I feel like I’m out in the wilderness, like I can escape.” Photo: Chris Donovan

NORTH BAY, Ont. (23/12/16) - Giulia Tignanelli, 83, and Adelina Tignanelli, 93, share a Christmas meal together at a relative's house in North Bay, Ont. The sisters-in-law are the only two remaining of their generation, and have known each other since Giulia immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1955 to live with Adelina and her family. As they get older, the occassion to see each other becomes less frequent. Although their children try their best to ensure the sisters see each other as often as possible, their growing difficulties with mobility must be taken into consideration. While other memories may be slipping away, these precious visits are filled with beautiful stories from times shared together over the past 62 years. Photo by Vanessa Tignanelli
