He and his friends gathered to fish for Walleye at night. Li explained that the fish see in the dark and hide during the day. First - Beautiful colours and symmetry in this composition-driven feature. It catches the eye and
draws you in to know more about the story.

Second - Great moment-driven feature. The lettering at the top of the frame is a little distracting. I
would still understand what was happening from an emotional sense without necessarily
needing the information at the top.

Third - Good use of frame for an interesting composition-driven feature.

This category in general could have been stronger.

First -  Photo is a good informational photo of the rally, but I would like to see the photographer work
to find more moments. It’s good that the photo is more intimately focused on one person and
brings you in, without losing the context of the larger event.

Second - Good use of light, composition and layering.

SPORTS

BELLEVILLE, ON. (10/01/18) – Left Winger Nick Paul of the Belleville Senators tries to slide the puck past goaltender Adam Wilcox of the Rochester Americans during the first period at Yardmen arena in Belleville. The Senators went on to win the game 3-2 in overtime. Photo by Sasha Sefter

First - A nice peak action photo and good anticipation of where to have camera to keep the action in the frame. I would just brighten this image as the ice and back boards look on the grey side. As well, although this is good peak action, the photo might not run with the story on the game because the Senators ended up winning, but this photo looks like more of a fumble. And the photo that goes with the story of the game is usually the photo chosen.

Second - The not busy background draw the viewer’s eye right to the peak action in this photo. Photographer did a good job isolating this moment cleanly.

Third - Also good peak action, nice to see photographer finding different, higher angle, but I would like to see both teams in the frame.

BELLEVILLE, ON. (02/04/2018)-- Samuel Earle, 20, is a second year Loyalist student in the Welding Techniques program. Here he stands in the middle of rows of welding booths at Loyalist College. He hopes his schooling here will prepare him for having his own custom fabrication shop one day. He's continuing his education at Loyalist next year as-well by taking the manufacturing and engineering course to learn more skills. Photo by Amy Walton

SINT MAARTEN, Netherlands (25/01/18) - Franklin Nicholls, 66, who's lived on Sint Martin for 40 years said this is his first time being without a home. “In February next month I’ll be 67, I’m in a shelter. I’ve never been in a shelter before. I feel feel very terrible about this situation that’s taking place right now.” His home in the French Quarter neighbourhood of Sint Maarten withstood five previous hurricanes but Irma, which landed at 5:00 a.m. September 6 of 2017 completely destroy the home. “Irma was devious compared to the 1995 event [Hurricane Louis]. All hell break loose on the face of the earth.”

First - Interesting and effective environmental portrait. Cool colours and warm colours on t-shirt provide a nice balance. Person in photo looks natural and feels like an honest moment.

Second - Portrait of this man tells the viewer about his story and what he is going through - his expression, his body language and his environment.

Third - A really striking portrait. I was going to give this one first place based just on how it stood out visually, but the caption info didn’t tell me much about the story. Nice use of sculpting light and framing.
