Generally tough to judge as it’s not a clearly defined category.  No third place.

NEWS

Judges Comments

This is always a tough category for students, because you’re not on the road like a full-time staffer.  A good news sense is crucial for good photos, and that only comes with experience.

No third place.  Everything else didn’t fit the category or just didn’t make the cut.

1. Good work in isolating one element while still being loose enough to show the environment.2. Interesting image from a staged event.  Again…it’s intriguing.

Portraits

Judges Comments

Look for good moments that tell a story about that person…or intrigue the viewer. And don’t shy away from playing with light when things fall flat. Lighting in itself can really help illustrate the personality.

1. This deserves first purely because it got my attention and made me want to know more. It’s intriguing. Nice work.
2. Good moment. Could use some burning around the edges.
3. Good moment. Shows personality.

SPORTS

Judges Comments

Think tighter for sports. Like any other image, sports images tell a story. If there is something in your frame that doesn’t add to the story, crop it out or find another image.

1. Great shot. Solid action with expressions on both dog and human.
2. Needs a hard crop off both sides and a shallower depth of field, but it still works as peak battle action.
3. Definitely needs a crop of the right side/top/bottom, but it’s the best out of what was left in the category.
