FEATURE
Judge's Comments:
#1. The detail in the caption is appreciated – a photojournalist should always be sure their photo presents as complete and succinct a package as possible. They should never assume a photo will spend its life riding beside a story. At this distance, especially with the subject’s face not visible, some photographers would have just walked away.
Besides the attention given the text, this is a nicely composed photo, showing the photographer saw all the potential interesting elements and wove them together
#2. Nicely timed though it would have been nice to have all of the shadow of the couple coming in from the left. I’d be curious to know what was possibly deemed to distracting and was cropped out of this frame
#3. Nice perspective and exposure to help the viewer explore the details

NEWS
Judge's Comments: The strongest category and a tough choice between first and second place. Franki Ikeman wins for the intimacy of the photo and the congruent composition of multiple elements -  the variety of emotions, hands, and flags. The shallow focus also helped keep the viewer’s attention on the right plane. Andrew Johnson’s photo of the convoy is clean. The waved flag lines up nicely, blocking the sun and between the flags on the bridge. Nicely timed, except the hearse has gone. If you’re taking that position, you want to have the hearse more clearly in the frame. Kitty McColm’s expression and the photographer’s position to get the light on McColm’s face made this a solid third choice. Not a very interesting event, but a nice picture that speaks to the sometimes bewildering variety of choices we have as consumers

1. Franki Ikeman
TRENTON, Ont. (24/10/14) - Trenton's Glen Miller Rd. over-pass had upwards of 150 people today to pay tribute to the fallen Canadian Armed Forces reservist, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, as he travelled back to Hamilton, Ont. along the Highway of Heroes (hwy 401) on Friday, Oct. 24. Photo by Franki Ikeman

PORTRAIT
Judge's Comments: The weakest category. There seems to be a big chasm between the photographers and their subjects. The subjects are mostly either looking too far away to get a read on their personality or staring stiffly straight into the camera. This photo works with its sparseness - a spray of water, a hint of life life jacket, and a big natural smile

Judge's Comments:
#1. The forethought makes this picture - slow shutter speed and the photographer’s position make a very neat picture. The timing was perfect, lining up the yellow curling stones
#2. Good timing, clean crop

MULTIPLE PICTURES
Judge's Comments: For a multi-picture story, it’s always interesting to see as many aspects of the story as time allows.
